History
The origins of Property of a Lady are unclear. It is in essence descended from the numerous games of chance such as drum roll, particularly popular amongst soldiers in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
The modern-era birth of the game is generally considered to have taken place around the turn of the twenty-first. It was quite possibly invented in Norwich, although London, Cardiff and Birmingham have all laid claims to its creation. The game itself has several slight variants, and remains predominantly played in the United Kingdom. The game has grown during recent years, enjoying particular popularity amongst students. Much of its success can be attributed to the poker boom.
While to some it is a glorified child's game, considered much akin to snap to others Property of a Lady is a fairly well-established member of the card-playing family.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under mens reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.”
—John Dos Passos (18961970)
“A man will not need to study history to find out what is best for his own culture.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? Why should not we have a poetry and philosophy of insight and not of tradition, and a religion by revelation to us, and not the history of theirs?”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
