Reception
Private Practice initially received mixed reviews. Metacritic which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, gave the show a score of 45 based on 25 critical reviews. The first episode was somewhat panned by critics and The New York Times described the show's characters as "collectively offer one of the most depressing portrayals of the female condition since The Bell Jar."
