Broadband Over Power Line (BPL)
Broadband over power line (BPL) is a system to transmit two-way data over the existing electrical distribution wiring in a metropolitan area. This would avoid the expense of a dedicated network of wires for data communication. However, because BPL uses some of the same radio frequencies used for over-the-air radio systems, interference is a problem. BPL would have applications in allowing utility companies to use smart metering and load management, providing two-way communication with customer equipment.

Famous quotes containing the words power and/or line:
“I, who cannot stay in my chamber for a single day without acquiring some rust,... confess that I am astonished at the power of endurance, to say nothing of the moral insensibility, of my neighbors who confine themselves to shops and offices the whole day for weeks and months, aye, and years almost together. I know not what manner of stuff they are of,sitting there now at three oclock in the afternoon, as if it were three oclock in the morning.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“We are apt to say that a foreign policy is successful only when the country, or at any rate the governing class, is united behind it. In reality, every line of policy is repudiated by a section, often by an influential section, of the country concerned. A foreign minister who waited until everyone agreed with him would have no foreign policy at all.”
—A.J.P. (Alan John Percivale)
