Portsmouth and Arundel Canal - The Tidal Channels

The Tidal Channels

The Portsea section was connected to the rest via a 13-mile channel dredged through Chichester Harbour, past the southern side of Thorney Island (original plan was to go around the northern side) and to the north of Hayling Island, and finally across Langstone Harbour. In order to facilitate the passage between the Chichester section and the Portsea section a steam vessel called the Egremont was constructed to tow 40 ton barges in trains of six. For a while the company also made Ports Creek navigable.

Famous quotes containing the words tidal and/or channels:

And now it is once more the tidal wave
That when it was swept by, leaves summits stained.
Oh, blood will out. It cannot be contained.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

Not too many years ago, a child’s experience was limited by how far he or she could ride a bicycle or by the physical boundaries that parents set. Today ... the real boundaries of a child’s life are set more by the number of available cable channels and videotapes, by the simulated reality of videogames, by the number of megabytes of memory in the home computer. Now kids can go anywhere, as long as they stay inside the electronic bubble.
    Richard Louv (20th century)
