Mina Zayid (Arabic: ميناء زايد) (Port Zayid or Zayed) is the commercial deep-water port that serves Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the former President of the United Arab Emirates.
Port Zayid is one of three main ports: Mina Zayed is the main gateway for container and general cargo vessels; Musaffah is located in the heart of the industrial city; and the Freeport caters to smaller vessels, tugs, barges, and service crafts. It covers an area of 510 hectares and contains 21 berths with depths ranging from 6 to 15 meters and a total berth length of 4,375 meters. In addition Mina Zayed has over 143,000 m2 of covered warehousing space and cold storage facilities with a capacity of 20,000 tons.
There are currently plans to move the port out of the city to Taweelah to reduce heavy goods vehicles in the city and to free up land in the city for residential and commercial development.
In 2010 the Red Bull Air Race World Championship season opened in Port Zayed. This was the sixth consecutive year that Abu Dhabi has hosted the Red Bull Air Race.
Famous quotes containing the word port:
“In the midst of this chopping sea of civilized life, such are the clouds and storms and quicksands and thousand-and-one items to be allowed for, that a man has to live, if he would not founder and go to the bottom and not make his port at all, by dead reckoning, and he must be a great calculator indeed who succeeds.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
