Police Caution - Purpose

Purpose

A police caution administered for the purpose of disposing of a criminal offense should not be confused with the caution used for the purpose of advising a suspect of their right to silence. A police caution (more properly known as a simple caution) is given by the police and is a non-statutory disposal for adult offenders.

The purposes of a formal police caution are:

  1. to allow the police and crown prosecution service in the case of large criminal cases to deal quickly with low to mid level offenders allowing time and resources to be focused on the most serious offenders;
  2. to deal quickly and simply with less serious offenders;
  3. to divert them from unnecessary appearance in the criminal courts; and
  4. to reduce the chances of their re-offending.

Famous quotes containing the word purpose:

    Man, her last work, who seemed so fair,
    Such splendid purpose in his eyes,
    Who rolled the psalm to wintry skies,
    Who built him fanes of fruitless prayer,

    Who trusted God was love indeed
    And love Creation’s final law—
    Though Nature, red in tooth and claw
    With ravine, shrieked against his creed—
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)

    I have never doubted your courage and devotion to the cause. But you have just lost a Division, and prima facie the fault is upon you; and while that remains unchanged, for me to put you in command again, is to justly subject me to the charge of having put you there on purpose to have you lose another.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

    I don’t like to be idle; in fact, I often feel somewhat guilty unless there is some purpose to what I am doing. But spending a few hours—or a few days—in the woods, swamps or alongside a stream has never seemed to me a waste of time.... I derive special benefit from a period of solitude.
    Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
