In Popular Culture
Poi makes an appearance in the video game Chrono Trigger as a prehistoric party food - which inexplicably causes one protagonist to become inebriated - and defeating the local chieftain in a poi-eating contest is required to advance the game.
Poi was mentioned in the 1992 comedy Wayne's World, when Wayne Campbell (played by Mike Myers) notes "...Pass the poi, mahalo."
The word "POI?" can be seen on the shirt of a background character in the South Park episode "Going Native".
