Platform screen doors (PSDs) and platform edge doors (PEDs) at train or subway stations screen the platform from the train. They are a relatively new addition to many metro systems around the world, some having been retrofitted to established systems. They are widely used in Asian and European metro systems. The first station in the world with platform screen doors is Park Pobedy (Russian: Парк Побе́ды) in the Saint Petersburg Metro that was opened in 1961.

Famous quotes containing the words platform, screen and/or doors:
“I have never yet spoken from a public platform about women in industry that someone has not said, But things are far better than they used to be. I confess to impatience with persons who are satisfied with a dangerously slow tempo of progress for half of society in an age which requires a much faster tempo than in the days that used to be. Let us use what might be instead of what has been as our yardstick!”
—Mary Barnett Gilson (1877?)
“She was custom built for the picturesteeny tiny, one inch less than five foot, and a perfectly enormous head. Her face went right from one side of the screen to the other. Gloria Swanson was like that, as well. Joan Crawford, too. You need the big face, for the closeups.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
“Men shut their doors against a setting sun.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
