Platelet Membrane Glycoprotein - Interactions of The Platelet Surface Glycoproteins

Interactions of The Platelet Surface Glycoproteins

The binding of von Willebrand factor (vWF) results in conformational changes within the GPIb-IX-V complex. In consequence, this complex activates GPIIb / IIIa membrane glycoproteins allowing them to bind fibrinogen. Fibrinogen molecules then interconnect the platelets serving as the basis for platelet aggregation. In the absence of fibrinogen, the platelets are joined by vWF due to its ability to bind the activated GPIIb / IIIa complex.

Famous quotes containing the words interactions and/or surface:

The exercise of power is determined by thousands of interactions between the world of the powerful and that of the powerless, all the more so because these worlds are never divided by a sharp line: everyone has a small part of himself in both.
    Václav Havel (b. 1936)

Voluptuaries, consumed by their senses, always begin by flinging themselves with a great display of frenzy into an abyss. But they survive, they come to the surface again. And they develop a routine of the abyss: “It’s four o’clock ... At five I have my abyss.”
    Colette [Sidonie Gabrielle Colette] (1873–1954)
