Techniques Used To Promote Planing in A Sailing Boat
Planing in a sailboat designed for it is promoted by the usual techniques for increasing speed:
- Sailing on a reach or broad reach to begin
- Raising the centreboard or daggerboard
- Keep the hull level, trapeze if necessary
in addition to these:
- Moving the crew weight increasingly towards the rear to begin and to sustain planing
- Flicking or pumping the sails (although there are restrictions on doing this in a race)
While planing, it is important to steer through the waves, avoiding any collision with the wave in front.

Famous quotes containing the words techniques, promote, sailing and/or boat:
“The techniques of opening conversation are universal. I knew long ago and rediscovered that the best way to attract attention, help, and conversation is to be lost. A man who seeing his mother starving to death on a path kicks her in the stomach to clear the way, will cheerfully devote several hours of his time giving wrong directions to a total stranger who claims to be lost.”
—John Steinbeck (19021968)
“The cult of individuality and personality, which promotes painters and poets only to promote itself, is really a business. The greater the genius of the personage, the greater the profit.”
—George Grosz (18931959)
“I saw three ships come sailing by,
Come sailing by, come sailing by,
I saw three ships come sailing by,
On Christmas Day in the morning.”

“Does this boat go to Europe, France?”
—Anita Loos (18931981)
