Planetary Mnemonic - Nine Planets

Nine Planets

A common English-language mnemonic for many years was "My Very Energetic (or Excellent, etc.) Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" (for Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto). Other mnemonics include "My Very Easy Method Just Shows Us Nine Planets", "My Very Energetic Mother Jumps Skateboards Under Nana's Patio" or "Mary's violet eyes make Johnny stay up nights plenty", and "My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets". However, these mnemonics were made obsolete by the 2006 definition of planet, which reclassified Pluto (as well as Ceres and Eris) as a dwarf planet.

Famous quotes containing the word planets:

Perhaps when distant people on other planets pick up some wave-length of ours all they hear is a continuous scream.
    Iris Murdoch (b. 1919)

Why are all these dolls falling out of the sky?
    Was there a father?
Or have the planets cut holes in their nets
    and let our childhood out,
or are we the dolls themselves,
    born but never fed?
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
