Pitch (resin)

Pitch (resin)

Pitch is a name for any of a number of viscoelastic, solid polymers. Pitch can be made from petroleum products or plants. Petroleum-derived pitch is also called bitumen or asphalt. Pitch produced from plants is also known as resin. Some products made from plant resin are also known as rosin.

Pitch was traditionally used to help caulk the seams of wooden sailing vessels (see shipbuilding). Pitch was also used to waterproof wooden containers, and is sometimes still used in the making of torches. Petroleum-derived pitch is black in colour, hence the adjectival phrase, "pitch-black".

Famous quotes containing the word pitch:

Though I have locked my gate on them
    I pity all the young,
I know what devil’s trade they learn
    From those they live among,
Their drink, their pitch and toss by day,
    Their robbery by night....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
