Controversies

In October 2004 the school made national news when junior Joshua Phelps was suspended for 21 days for possessing a firearm on campus. The weapon in question was a musket, which Phelps had forgotten to remove from his car after participating in a Civil War re-enactment. Town of Crawford police charged him with a misdemeanor after confiscating the gun, a bayonet and ammunition from the vehicle. He received many letters of support locally and nationally, particularly from members of the National Rifle Association, but the school district refused to lessen his punishment, citing zero tolerance policies it and many other schools adopted in the wake of the Columbine massacre several years earlier. The criminal charge was later dropped.
