Piet Joubert - Early Life

Early Life

Joubert was born in the district of Prince Albert, Cape Colony, a descendant of a French Huguenot who fled to South Africa soon after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV. Left an orphan at an early age, Joubert migrated to the Transvaal, where he settled in the Wakkerstroom district near Laing's Nek and the north-east angle of Natal. There he not only farmed with great success, but turned his attention to the study of the law.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

When lilacs last in the dooryard bloomed
And the great star early drooped in the western sky in the night,
I mourned, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.
Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring,
Lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,
And thought of him I love.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

Art is not a treasure in the past or an importation from another land, but part of the present life of all living and creating peoples.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
