Sport

The sport in Piedmont, except for football, developed itself to a certain level only after the Second World War. At a sporting level Piedmontese companies have distinguished themselves in recent times especially in football with the Juventus and the Torino and the smaller teams such as Novara, Alessandria, Casale (that won 1 Scudetto), Pro Vercelli (that won 7 Scudetto) and Cuneo, in volleyball with the team of Cuneo (male) and Novara (female), in basketball with the Biella Basketball and Junior Casale, in the ice hockey with the historic and glorious Hockey Club Turin (team founded in 1947) and in the roller hockey with the Amatori Vercelli, that won three league titles, an Italian Cup and two CERS Cup.

Famous quotes containing the word sport:

For generations, a wide range of shooting in Northern Ireland has provided all sections of the population with a pastime which ... has occupied a great deal of leisure time. Unlike many other countries, the outstanding characteristic of the sport has been that it was not confined to any one class.
—Northern Irish Tourist Board. quoted in New Statesman (London, Aug. 29, 1969)

“Justice” was done, and the President of the Immortals, in Æschylean phrase, had ended his sport with Tess. And the d’Urberville knights and dames slept on in their tombs unknowing. The two speechless gazers bent themselves down to the earth, as if in prayer, and remained thus a long time, absolutely motionless: the flag continued to wave silently. As soon as they had strength they arose, joined hands again, and went on.
    The End
    Thomas Hardy (1840–1928)

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.

    George Orwell (1903–1950)
