Pick Operating System

The Pick operating system (often called just "the Pick system" or simply "Pick") is a demand-paged, multiuser, virtual memory, time-sharing computer operating system based around a unique "multivalued" database. Pick is used primarily for business data processing. Though its use has never been properly advertised, its capabilities are far ahead of their time and there is still a strong enthusiastic user community.

The term "Pick system" has also come to be used as the general name of all operating environments which employ this multivalued database and have some implementation of Pick/BASIC and ENGLISH/Access queries. Although Pick started on a variety of minicomputers, the system and its various implementations eventually spread to a large assortment of microcomputers, personal computers and mainframe computers and was still in use as of 2012.

Famous quotes containing the words pick, operating and/or system:

José’s my first non-rat romance. Not that he’s my idea of the absolute finito. He’s too prim and cautious to be my absolute ideal, Now, if I could choose from anybody alive, I wouldn’t pick José. Nehru, maybe, or Albert Schweitzer. Or Leonard Bernstein.
    George Axelrod (b. 1922)

Many people operate under the assumption that since parenting is a natural adult function, we should instinctively know how to do it—and do it well. The truth is, effective parenting requires study and practice like any other skilled profession. Who would even consider turning an untrained surgeon loose in an operating room? Yet we “operate” on our children every day.
    Louise Hart (20th century)

Television is an excellent system when one has nothing to lose, as is the case with a nomadic and rootless country like the United States, but in Europe the affect of television is that of a bulldozer which reduces culture to the lowest possible denominator.
    Marc Fumaroli (b. 1932)
