History
During the Middle Ages, some of the Petrucci Family served as knights for the Republic of Venice.
From 1487 until 1523 the Petrucci family ruled the Italian city-state of Siena. The most famous ruler was the first of the Petrucci's to rule, Pandolfo, who brought prosperity to Siena. The son of Pandolfo was Alfonso, who became a cardinal in 1511, but was found guilty of plotting to kill Pope Leo X and was strangled to death for his crimes in 1517. After Pandolfo died in 1512, his son, Borghese succeeded him, only to be ousted by his cousin, Raffaello, with the help of Pope Leo X. The final ruler of the Petrucci Dynasty was Raffaello's son, Fabio, who was driven into exile by the Siennian people in 1523.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Books of natural history aim commonly to be hasty schedules, or inventories of Gods property, by some clerk. They do not in the least teach the divine view of nature, but the popular view, or rather the popular method of studying nature, and make haste to conduct the persevering pupil only into that dilemma where the professors always dwell.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The custard is setting; meanwhile
I not only have my own history to worry about
But am forced to fret over insufficient details related to large
Unfinished concepts that can never bring themselves to the point
Of being, with or without my help, if any were forthcoming.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
“There is a history in all mens lives,
Figuring the natures of the times deceased,
The which observed, a man may prophesy,
With a near aim, of the main chance of things
As yet not come to life.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
