Controversy

A sex and intelligence article by Helmuth Nyborg from 2005 led to strong reaction in the Danish media and a subsequent investigation of his study. Nyborg was initially suspended from his job, but then reinstated and given a "severe reprimand". According to a 2006 news story in Science: "Colleagues from around the world have rallied to his defense, accusing the university of having political motives, and claiming that the errors in his research were trivial." He was eventually acquitted by the Danish Committees on Scientific Dishonesty of the charges of scientific misconduct. In view of that decision, after Nyborg's retirement in 2007 the severe reprimand initially given to him by Aarhus University was changed to a "warning" because of the unacceptable standard of the scientific research, but not rising to the level of actual professional misconduct. After the DCSD cleared Nyborg of the charges of scientific misconduct, two Aarhus University professors, Lise Togeby and Jens Mammen resigned from their positions in the DCSD, citing that the DCSD operated from too narrow of a framework.

Famous quotes containing the word controversy:

And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
