Future Directions
PURLz 2.0, currently Beta testing, makes major changes to the PURL concept and implementation. Most notably in terms of implementation, the software runs on a Semantic Web framework with information stored in an RDF database. The implementation team intends for the software to provide all the functions of a Web server, excluding the serving of content. Active PURLs, which act similar to a stored procedure in relational databases, are being experimented with to allow a PURL server to actively participate in the creation of metadata describing a Web resource.

Famous quotes containing the words future and/or directions:
“At sixty, I would like to give my future back its vistas of uncertainty.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“My friend devotes himself to his life, whenever he can find the spare time. His motto is: Dont just sit there: live! So hes too busy to stand, to walk, to do anything, except to live. He even refused to kiss a girl, when invited, on the grounds that it was time again to be living. Schedules are sacred to him.”
—Marvin Cohen, U.S. author and humorist. The Self-Devoted Friend, New Directions (1967)
