PALs in Popular Culture
Over time PALs and PAL-like systems have appeared in numerous productions of the entertainment industry, often without being called such by name. For example, they can be found in films such as Damnation Alley (1977), WarGames (1983), Crimson Tide (1995), and The Sum of All Fears (2002), in the video game Metal Gear Solid (1998), or in the fourth season of the television program 24.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:
“Popular culture entered my life as Shirley Temple, who was exactly my age and wrote a letter in the newspapers telling how her mother fixed spinach for her, with lots of butter.... I was impressed by Shirley Temple as a little girl my age who had power: she could write a piece for the newspapers and have it printed in her own handwriting.”
—Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
“Party action should follow, not precede the creation of a dominant popular sentiment.”
—J. Ellen Foster (18401910)
“Our culture has become something that is completely and utterly in love with its parent. Its become a notion of boredom that is bought and sold, where nothing will happen except that people will become more and more terrified of tomorrow, because the new continues to look old, and the old will always look cute.”
—Malcolm McLaren (b. 1946)
