Perdido Street Station is the second published novel by China MiƩville and the first of three independent works set in the fictional world of Bas-Lag, a world where both magic (referred to as 'thaumaturgy') and steampunk technology exist. The novel has won several literary awards.
In an interview, MiƩville described this book as "basically a secondary world fantasy with Victorian era technology. So rather than being a feudal world, it's an early industrial capitalist world of a fairly grubby, police statey kind!"
Perdido Street Station is set in Bas-Lag's large city-state of New Crobuzon: the title refers to a railway station at the heart of the city.

Famous quotes containing the word street:
“Think of admitting the details of a single case of the criminal court into our thoughts, to stalk profanely through their very sanctum sanctorum for an hour, ay, for many hours! to make a very barroom of the minds inmost apartment, as if for so long the dust of the street had occupied us,the very street itself, with all its travel, its bustle, and filth, had passed through our thoughts shrine! Would it not be an intellectual and moral suicide?”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
