Non-Marxist-Leninist People's Republics
There are two People's Republics which do not subscribe to communism:
- People's Republic of Bangladesh
- People's Democratic Republic of Algeria
Historical examples include:
- Ukraine is the only country which named itself "People's republic" twice, these being the Ukrainian People's Republic (founded in 1917, covering approximately the territory of the pre-1939 Ukrainian SSR) and the West Ukrainian People's Republic (founded in 1918, covering the lands of the later Austria-Hungary which were inhabited predominantly by Ukrainians). The UPR was the world's first People's Republic.
- Belarusian People's Republic (1918–1919)
- Libya was officially called Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya between 1977 and 2011.

Famous quotes containing the words people and/or republics:
“The admission of Oriental immigrants who cannot be amalgamated with our people has been made the subject either of prohibitory clauses in our treaties and statutes or of strict administrative regulations secured by diplomatic negotiations. I sincerely hope that we may continue to minimize the evils likely to arise from such immigration without unnecessary friction and by mutual concessions between self-respecting governments.”
—William Howard Taft (18571930)
“Royalty is a government in which the attention of the nation is concentrated on one person doing interesting actions. A Republic is a government in which that attention is divided between many, who are all doing uninteresting actions. Accordingly, so long as the human heart is strong and the human reason weak, Royalty will be strong because it appeals to diffused feeling, and Republics weak because they appeal to the understanding.”
—Walter Bagehot (18261877)
