People's Assembly of Egypt

People's Assembly Of Egypt

The House of Representatives (Arabic: ‎ مجلس النواب, Maglis Al-Nowwab) is the lower house of Egypt's bicameral parliament. It plays a more important role in drafting legislation and day-to-day legislative duties than the Shura Council, the upper house. The Assembly chose the members of the Constituent Assembly of Egypt.

On 14 June 2012, the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt ruled that part of the parliamentary election had been invalid and ordered a new ballot, citing alleged problems in the election of members. Based on this ruling, the SCAF military council declared the lower house of parliament dissolved. However, newly-elected president Mohammed Mursi decreed that he was setting aside the decision of the military and ordered the legislature to reconvene on 8 July. On 10 July 2012, the Supreme Constitutional Court voided the President's decision to call the nation's parliament back into session. The Supreme Administrative Court ruled on 22 September 2012 in favor of the earlier ruling of the Supreme Constitutional Court to dissolve the People's Assembly.

Famous quotes containing the words people, assembly and/or egypt:

My consolation is to think of the women I have known, now that there is no longer such thing as elegance. But how can people who contemplate these horrible creatures under their hats covered in pigeon-houses or gardens, how can they understand the charm of seeing Madame Swann wearing a simple mauve cap or a small hat surmounted by a straight iris?
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)

Had every Athenian citizen been a Socrates, every Athenian assembly would still have been a mob.
    James Madison (1751–1836)

The LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
    Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 26:8.
