Aftermath

Although the jury in the criminal trial acquitted Goetz of all the charges except criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, the charges were reinstated on appeal. One of the victims of the shooting, Darrell Cabey, who remained paralyzed, sued Goetz. The jury found in favor of Cabey and awarded him the sum of $18,000,000 in compensatory damages and $25,000,000 in punitive damages.
