P.E.O. Sisterhood - History

History

The Sisterhood was founded January 21, 1869, as a seven-member sorority at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. It is the second sorority to be founded in the U.S. The founding members were Mary Allen (1848–1927), Ella Stewart (1848–94), Alice Bird (1850–1926), Hattie Briggs (1849–77), Franc Roads (1852–1924), Alice Virginia Coffin (1848–88), and Suela Pearson (1851–1920).

The first non-U.S. chapter was established in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1911.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)

To summarize the contentions of this paper then. Firstly, the phrase ‘the meaning of a word’ is a spurious phrase. Secondly and consequently, a re-examination is needed of phrases like the two which I discuss, ‘being a part of the meaning of’ and ‘having the same meaning.’ On these matters, dogmatists require prodding: although history indeed suggests that it may sometimes be better to let sleeping dogmatists lie.
    —J.L. (John Langshaw)

It’s not the sentiments of men which make history but their actions.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
