Penile Prosthesis - Types of Device

Types of Device

Semirigid devices range from permanently erect ones that cannot be altered to malleable ones that can be bent into position where appropriate. The simplest type of prosthesis consists of a pair of malleable rods surgically implanted within the erection chambers of the penis. With this type of implant the penis is always semi-rigid and merely needs to be lifted or adjusted into the desired position.

Hydraulic, inflatable prosthesis also exist. These use fluid and are inflated or deflated on demand. Almost all current devices perform satisfactorily for a decade before needing replacement. Some surgeons recommend these due to the opinion that they are more easily concealed.

Famous quotes containing the words types of, types and/or device:

Science is intimately integrated with the whole social structure and cultural tradition. They mutually support one other—only in certain types of society can science flourish, and conversely without a continuous and healthy development and application of science such a society cannot function properly.
    Talcott Parsons (1902–1979)

The wider the range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences. We must widen the range of topics and goals, the types of situations we offer and their degree of structure, the kinds and combinations of resources and materials, and the possible interactions with things, peers, and adults.
    Loris Malaguzzi (1920–1994)

Syntax is the study of the principles and processes by which sentences are constructed in particular languages. Syntactic investigation of a given language has as its goal the construction of a grammar that can be viewed as a device of some sort for producing the sentences of the language under analysis.
    Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)
