Minister of Finance
Malan was the Minister of Finance for Brazil, from January 1, 1995 to December 31, 2002, during the presidency of Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Along with MarcĂlio Marques Moreira, Malan worked for the Fernando Collor de Mello administration as an official negotiator of the foreign debt of Brazil with the International Monetary Fund. He is credited with successfully reforming the nation's banking system, saving Brazil from the negative effects of 1997's Asian market crisis.
He was also one of the architects of the Plano Real.
