Patrick in its earlist form, can be found as Patroclus (Ancient Greek: Πάτροκλος Patroklos "glory of the father"), Achilles' comrade in Homer's Iliad. Later forms of the name are derived from the Latin name Patricius (patrician, i.e. "nobleman"). Owing to the importance of Saint Patrick in Irish history, it is an especially popular name in Ireland.
