Patrick Dempsey Center For Cancer Hope & Healing and Dempsey Challenge

In 1997, Dempsey's mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her cancer has relapsed five times over the past fifteen years. In response to his mother's bouts with cancer, Dempsey helped start the Patrick Dempsey Center at Central Maine Medical Center in his home town of Lewiston, Maine. In October 2009 when Dempsey introduced the first Dempsey Challenge, registration was closed after reaching the goal of 3,500 cyclists, runners and walkers. The event raised more than $1 million for the cancer center. His mother was in the crowd as Dempsey finished his 50-mile ride. The Challenge has since become an annual October event presented by Amgen in the Lewiston–Auburn area.

Famous quotes containing the words patrick, center, cancer, hope, healing and/or challenge:

The loosening, for some people, of rigid role definitions for men and women has shown that dads can be great at calming babies—if they take the time and make the effort to learn how. It’s that time and effort that not only teaches the dad how to calm the babies, but also turns him into a parent, just as the time and effort the mother puts into the babies turns her into a parent.
    —Pamela Patrick Novotny (20th century)

Whenever there’s a big war coming on, you should rope off a big field. And on the big day, you should take all the kings and their cabinets and their generals, put ‘em in the center dressed in their underpants and let them fight it out with clubs. The best country wins.
    Maxwell Anderson (1888–1959)

We “need” cancer because, by the very fact of its incurability, it makes all other diseases, however virulent, not cancer.
Gilbert Adair, British author, critic. “Under the Sign of Cancer,” Myths and Memories (1986)

If Men and Women took their Pleasures as noisily as the Cats, what Londoner could ever hope to sleep of nights?
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

The words of kindness are more healing to a drooping heart than balm or honey.
    Sarah Fielding (1710–1768)

The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not to frighten them, but to challenge them.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)
