Gender and Sexual Orientation

Main article: Passing (gender) See also: The closet

Passing as a different sexual orientation has traditionally been an action taken by homosexual men and women who pretend to be heterosexual to avoid embarrassment or hostility. The phrase "in the closet" is often used for a secret homosexual (or bisexual). Within the transgender community, "passing" is used to mean when a transitioned or transitioning trans man or trans woman is recognised as their transitioned gender in everyday life without giving away their biological sex.

Famous quotes containing the words gender and/or orientation:

    But there, where I have garnered up my heart,
    Where either I must live or bear no life;
    The fountain from the which my current runs
    Or else dries up: to be discarded thence,
    Or keep it as a cistern for foul toads
    To knot and gender in!
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    Every orientation presupposes a disorientation.
    Hans Magnus Enzensberger (b. 1929)
