Attempted Censorship By Security Services

In December 2011 it was revealed that former BBC Director General Sir Ian Trethowan had met with the heads of MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service about an episode of Panorama dealing with the security services. He showed a video recording of the original programme to Bernard Sheldon, then legal adviser to MI5. The latter suggested cuts to the programme and Trethowan asked the head of BBC News to reduce the programme to half its length.

Famous quotes containing the words attempted, censorship, security and/or services:

Many have attempted unnatural acts, but Nature has always shown the way.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

Right now I think censorship is necessary; the things they’re doing and saying in films right now just shouldn’t be allowed. There’s no dignity anymore and I think that’s very important.
    Mae West (1892–1980)

Those words freedom and opportunity do not mean a license to climb upwards by pushing other people down. Any paternalistic system that tries to provide for security for everyone from above only calls for an impossible task and a regimentation utterly uncongenial to the spirit of our people.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

O, the difference of man and man!
To thee a woman’s services are due.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
