Paddy Reilly

Patrick 'Paddy' Reilly (b. October 18, 1939 in Dublin) is an Irish folk singer and guitarist. He is one of Ireland's most famous balladeers and is best known for his renditions of "The Fields of Athenry" and "The Town I Loved So Well".

For years a solo performer, he joined The Dubliners in 1996 as a replacement for long-time member Ronnie Drew. He left the group after 9 years to move to New York (where he owns a number of pubs) in 2005 and was replaced by Patsy Watchorn.

He currently owns a number of bars in New York, including Paddy Reilly's on 29th Street and 2nd Avenue. (Paddy sold "Paddy Reilly's" to his former partner, Steve Duggan.) Paddy now lives in Naples, Florida and frequents O'Donoghue's Bar & Grill, Marco Island along with Paddy Murphys, 5th Avenue Naples.

O Paddy dear, an’ did ye hear the news that’s goin’ round?
The shamrock is by law forbid to grow on Irish ground!
No more Saint Patrick’s Day we’ll keep, his colour can’t be seen,
For there’s a cruel law agin the wearin’ o’ the Green!
—Unknown. The Wearing of the Green (l. 37–40)

While you continue to grow fatter and richer publishing your nauseating confectionery, I shall become a mole, digging here, rooting there, stirring up the whole rotten mess where life is hard, raw and ugly.
    —Norman Reilly Raine (1895–1971)
