Platform tennis is a similar sport, which was invented in 1928 in Scarsdale, New York, United States by James Cogswell and Fessenden Blanchard. The primary difference from paddle tennis is that the court is 6 feet shorter, fenced by taut chicken wire off which the ball can be played. Platform tennis uses a solid sponge rubber ball and overhead serving is permitted. Platform tennis is popular in the Northeastern and Midwestern U.S., since the raised court (the platform) can be heated for winter play.

Padel tennis (or just "Padel") is also similar. Padel is typically played in doubles on an enclosed court about half the size of a tennis court. It is popular in Europe and Latin America. Padel tennis was invented in 1969 in Acapulco, Mexico by Enrique Corcuera.

Famous quotes containing the words similar and/or sports:

So-called professional mathematicians have, in their reliance on the relative incapacity of the rest of mankind, acquired for themselves a reputation for profundity very similar to the reputation for sanctity possessed by theologians.
    —G.C. (Georg Christoph)

In the past, it seemed to make sense for a sportswriter on sabbatical from the playpen to attend the quadrennial hawgkilling when Presidential candidates are chosen, to observe and report upon politicians at play. After all, national conventions are games of a sort, and sports offers few spectacles richer in low comedy.
