Coyle was born in the ‘Little Donegal’ area of Glasgow to parents from Ireland and is a frequent visitor to Gweedore, County Donegal. He made an appearance in the Scottish football film A Shot at Glory, in 2000, alongside The Godfather star Robert Duvall, Michael Keaton and Ally McCoist. He has been described as a committed Christian and teetotaller.
