What Is Futures Studies?

Futures studies can be described as all of the following:

  • a branch of science –
    • a branch of social science –
    • a parallel discipline to history – the field of history concerns the discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of information about past events. It uses a narrative to examine and analyse the sequence of events, and it sometimes attempts to investigate objectively the patterns of cause and effect that determine events. Likewise futures studies uses narrative, entitled scenarios, that describe potential events and conditions over time in the future rather than in the past as history does.

"In contrast to many future-oriented organizations that think of "the future" in a singular way as determined by present trends, WFSF encourages and promotes 'plural futures' through exploration of alternative and preferred futures."

Famous quotes containing the word futures:

One of the things that is most striking about the young generation is that they never talk about their own futures, there are no futures for this generation, not any of them and so naturally they never think of them. It is very striking, they do not live in the present they just live, as well as they can, and they do not plan. It is extraordinary that whole populations have no projects for a future, none at all.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)
