Final Years
In 1947, the new Hungarian government, under President Zoltán Tildy, decreed that any artist over the age of 60, which included the then 74 year-old Kaufmann, would receive a state pension. Kaufmann was also able to continue his architectural work through government commissions. When Kaufmann died at the age of 79 in 1956, he had produced two more theaters. His final work, which was completed four years after his death, was the renovation of the Madách Theater in Budapest.

“Remember the waterfront shack with the sign FRESH FISH SOLD HERE. Of course its fresh, were on the ocean. Of course its for sale, were not giving it away. Of course its here, otherwise the sign would be someplace else. The final sign: FISH.”

“America is a great country. It has many shortcomings, many social inequalities, and its tragic that the problem of the blacks wasnt solved fifty or even a hundred years ago, but its still a great country, a country full of opportunities, of freedom! Does it seem nothing to you to be able to say what you like, even against the government, the Establishment?”
—Golda Meir (18981978)
