Orthodoxy in Greece

Orthodoxy in Greece may refer to:

  • Church of Greece - the autocephalous church of Greece which is organised into 81 dioceses. However, 30 of these are nominally under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (see below).
  • Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople - the dioceses of Crete and the Dodecanese, and Mount Athos are under the direct jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. 30 dioceses in northern Greece and in the major islands in the north and northeast Aegean are nominally under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, but are administered "in stewardship" as part of the Church of Greece
  • Various Greek Old Calendarist jurisdictions (not in communion with the Eastern Orthodox Churches under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople )

Famous quotes containing the word greece:

The science, the art, the jurisprudence, the chief political and social theories, of the modern world have grown out of Greece and Rome—not by favor of, but in the teeth of, the fundamental teachings of early Christianity, to which science, art, and any serious occupation with the things of this world were alike despicable.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)
