Bureau of Operations
Under the Chief of Fire Operations there are five borough chiefs, each responsible for one of the five political boundaries within New York City.

- Bronx Borough
Below the borough, the department is organized into functional units. Each borough is subdivided into smaller units called divisions and further divided into battalions. A battalion is a collection of FDNY resources or “units” (e.g., engine and ladder companies) responsible for a geographical area of the city. Four to five firefighters and one officer generally make up a unit. Five to eight units make up a battalion. Four to seven battalions make up a division.
