At present, several species of water-purifying plants, bacteria, and fish and other things are used in water purification, improving efficiency and/or ecosystem support. Purification implies removal of impurities from the water. Different organisms have different removal mechanisms, and some organisms may be ineffective at removing impurities of interest.
