Order Of Elizabeth
The Imperial Austrian Order of Elizabeth (German: Kaiserlich österreichischer Elizabeth-Orden), founded in 1898 by Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary was an order created for women. The Order was the namesake of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, but was created to honor and memorialize Franz Joseph's recently slain wife, Empress-Queen Elisabeth.
The order, which only existed until the end of the monarchy in 1918, was divided into three classes: The Grand Cross, first and second classes. There was also an Elizabeth Medal for civil merit.

Famous quotes containing the words order and/or elizabeth:
“Since [Rousseaus] time, and largely thanks to him, the Ego has steadily tended to efface itself, and, for purposes of model, to become a manikin on which the toilet of education is to be draped in order to show the fit or misfit of the clothes. The object of study is the garment, not the figure.”
—Henry Brooks Adams (18381918)
“Then hail! thou noble conquerer!
That, when tyranny oppressed,
Hewed for our fathers from the wild
A land wherein to rest.”
—Mary Elizabeth Hewitt (b. 1818)
