Orange (colour)

Orange (colour)

The colour orange takes its name from the orange fruit. On the spectrum of light, and in the traditional colour wheel used by painters, it is located between red and yellow.

In optics, it has a wavelength between approximately 585–620 nm and a hue of 30° in HSV colour space. In the RGB colour space it is a tertiary colour numerically halfway between gamma-compressed red and yellow, as can be seen in the RGB colour wheel. The complementary colour of orange is azure. Orange pigments are largely in the ochre or cadmium families, and absorb mostly blue light.

Famous quotes containing the word orange:

    He hangs in shades the orange bright,
    Like golden lamps in a green night,
    And does in the pomegranates close
    Jewels more rich than Ormus shows;
    He makes the figs our mouths to meet,
    And throws the melons at our feet;
    But apples plants of such a price
    No tree could ever bear them twice.
    Andrew Marvell (1621–1678)
