Propagation Speed and Delay
Optical cables transfer data at the speed of light in glass (slower than vacuum). This is typically around 180,000 to 200,000 km/s, resulting in 5.0 to 5.5 microseconds of latency per km. Thus the round-trip delay time for 1000 km is around 11 ms.

Famous quotes containing the words speed and/or delay:
“Among the laws controlling human societies there is one more precise and clearer, it seems to me, than all the others. If men are to remain civilized or to become civilized, the art of association must develop and improve among them at the same speed as equality of conditions spreads.”
—Alexis de Tocqueville (18051859)
“Keep on adding, keep on walking, keep on progressing: do not delay on the road, do not go back, do not deviate.”
—St. Augustine (354430)
