Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball - No-shows/Omitted Women

No-shows/Omitted Women

People who might have been there but were not included Whoopi Goldberg, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Eartha Kitt, RuPaul, Vanessa L. Williams and Beyoncé. Franklin's absence was probably the most surprising to many followed by Goldberg's. Winfrey's The Color Purple co-star Goldberg was the only African American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award more than once, and the first African American actress to win one since Hattie McDaniel. The absence of Houston was not a surprise to many, because of her drug battle around that time. Hill was both the first woman to receive 10 Grammy nominations in one year and first to win 5 in one night. Williams was the first African American Miss America. It has been said that Winfrey mentioned Franklin and Beyoncé's absences were due to scheduling conflicts.

Famous quotes containing the words omitted and/or women:

Histories of the world omitted China; if a Chinaman invented compass or movable type or gunpowder we promptly “forgot it” and named their European inventors. In short, we regarded China as a sort of different and quite inconsequential planet.
    —W.E.B. (William Edward Burghardt)

Swann was one of those men who, having long lived in the illusions of love, saw the well-being that they gave to many women heighten their happiness without evoking in these women any gratitude, any tenderness toward them; but in their child these men believe they feel an affection which, embodied in their very name, will make them outlast their death. When there was to no longer be a Charles Swann, there would still be a Mademoiselle Swann ... who would continue to love her departed father.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)
