General Use
The general purpose of an ODS is to integrate data from disparate source systems in a single structure, using data integration technologies like data virtualization, data federation, or extract, transform, and load. This will allow operational access to the data for operational reporting, master data or reference data management.
An ODS is not a replacement or substitute for an enterprise data warehouse but in turn could become a source.
Some examples of ODS Architecture Patterns can be found in the article Architecture Patterns.

Famous quotes containing the word general:
“The General has dedicated himself so many times, he must feel like the cornerstone of a public building.”
—Adlai Stevenson (19001965)
“The first general store opened on the Cold Saturday of the winter of 1833 ... Mrs. Mary Miller, daughter of the stores promoter, recorded in a letter: Chickens and birds fell dead from their roosts, cows ran bellowing through the streets; but she failed to state what effect the freeze had on the gala occasion of the store opening.”
—Administration in the State of Sout, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
