Security
At the 2010 DEF CON conference, it was demonstrated with OpenBTS that GSM calls can be intercepted due to the fact that in GSM the handset does not authenticate the base station prior to accessing the network.
OpenBTS has been used by the security research community to mount attacks on cellular phone baseband processors. Previously, investigating and conducting such attacks was considered impractical due of the high cost of traditional cellular base station equipment.

Famous quotes containing the word security:
“There is something that Governments care for far more than human life, and that is the security of property, and so it is through property that we shall strike the enemy.... Be militant each in your own way.... I incite this meeting to rebellion.”
—Emmeline Pankhurst (18581928)
“Of course we will continue to work for cheaper electricity in the homes and on the farms of America; for better and cheaper transportation; for low interest rates; for sounder home financing; for better banking; for the regulation of security issues; for reciprocal trade among nations and for the wiping out of slums. And my friends, for all of these we have only begun to fight.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“There is one safeguard known generally to the wise, which is an advantage and security to all, but especially to democracies as against despots. What is it? Distrust.”
—Demosthenes (c. 384322 B.C.)
