Steeple Damage
The original steeple of the Old North Church was destroyed by the Storm of October 1804. A replacement steeple, designed by Charles Bulfinch was toppled by Hurricane Carol on August 31, 1954. The current steeple uses design elements from the original and the Bulfinch version. The church is now 175 feet (53 m) tall. At its tip is the original weathervane.

Famous quotes containing the words steeple and/or damage:
“Alle fresh the level pasture lay,
And not a shadowe mote by seene,
Save where full fyve good miles away
The steeple towered from out the greene,”

“I learned early to understand that there is no such condition in human affairs as absolute truth. There is only truth as people see it, and truth, even in fact, may be kaleidoscopic in its variety. The damage such perception did to me I have felt ever since ... I could never belong entirely to one side of any question.”
—Pearl S. Buck (18921973)
