The Independence Party (Icelandic: Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) was a political party in Iceland. The Independence Party langsum and the Independence Party þversum denote two factions that split the party at one time. The party dissolved in 1927 and its members mostly divided between the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. However, in 1929, the Conservative Party and Liberal Party merged. The new party was named the Independence Party, which purposefully evoked the name of the defunct Old Independence Party.

Famous quotes containing the words independence and/or party:

Our treatment of both older people and children reflects the value we place on independence and autonomy. We do our best to make our children independent from birth. We leave them all alone in rooms with the lights out and tell them, “Go to sleep by yourselves.” And the old people we respect most are the ones who will fight for their independence, who would sooner starve to death than ask for help.
    Margaret Mead (1901–1978)

When the doctrine of allegiance to party can utterly up-end a man’s moral constitution and make a temporary fool of him besides, what excuse are you going to offer for preaching it, teaching it, extending it, perpetuating it? Shall you say, the best good of the country demands allegiance to party? Shall you also say it demands that a man kick his truth and his conscience into the gutter, and become a mouthing lunatic, besides?
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
