Oklahoma Senate - Leadership

Leadership

  • The Lieutenant Governor serves as President of the Senate but only casts a vote in the case of a tie and has rarely presided since the 1960s. The President Pro Tempore is the one who serves as leader of the Senate and is the head of the majority party. The President Pro Tempore appoints the Majority Floor Leader and the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. Along with the elected officers of the majority caucus (Caucus Chair, Caucus Vice Chair, three Assistant Majority Leaders and four Majority Whips), they comprise the leadership of the Senate majority. The minority caucus prefers to be called by their party instead of the term "Minority." When Democrats controlled the Chamber, the minority leader was called the "Republican Leader." Today, with the Republicans in the majority, the leader of the minority is called the "Democratic Leader." Along with elected Assistant Democratic Leaders and Democratic Whips and the Caucus Chair, they comprise the Senate minority leadership team.

Famous quotes containing the word leadership:

A woman who occupies the same realm of thought with man, who can explore with him the depths of science, comprehend the steps of progress through the long past and prophesy those of the momentous future, must ever be surprised and aggravated with his assumptions of leadership and superiority, a superiority she never concedes, an authority she utterly repudiates.
    Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902)

During the first World War women in the United States had a chance to try their capacities in wider fields of executive leadership in industry. Must we always wait for war to give us opportunity? And must the pendulum always swing back in the busy world of work and workers during times of peace?
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)
