Okells Brewery - History

History

Dr. William Okell, a Cheshire surgeon, started Okell's Brewery in Castle Hill, Douglas in 1850. By 1874 Dr. Okell owned many of the pubs on the island, had convinced Tynwald, the island's parliament, to create an act ensuring the purity of beer brewed on the Isle of Man, and built The Falcon Steam Brewery just outside Douglas.

In 1972 Okells was bought by Heron & Brearley, a local drinks company. Then, in 1986, it was merged with Castletown Brewery and renamed The Isle of Man Breweries.

In August 1994 the company moved to a new purpose built brewery outside Douglas and reverted back to the name Heron & Brearley.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Literary works cannot be taken over like factories, or literary forms of expression like industrial methods. Realist writing, of which history offers many widely varying examples, is likewise conditioned by the question of how, when and for what class it is made use of.
    Bertolt Brecht (1898–1956)

There are two great unknown forces to-day, electricity and woman, but men can reckon much better on electricity than they can on woman.
Josephine K. Henry, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 15, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

The history of philosophy is to a great extent that of a certain clash of human temperaments.
    William James (1842–1910)
