Ogier The Dane - Possible Historic Basis

Possible Historic Basis

The 12th c. Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus was not familiar with the character and Ogier has not been connected to any historic event in Denmark. However, there is a chronicle from St Martin's monastery in Cologne which claims that the monastery had been pillaged by the Saxons in 778, but that it was rebuilt by an "Olgerus, dux DaniƦ" ("Olger, Leader of the Danes"), with the help of Charlemagne.

Famous quotes containing the words historic and/or basis:

Never is a historic deed already completed when it is done but always only when it is handed down to posterity. What we call “history” by no means represents the sum total of all significant deeds.... World history ... only comprises that tiny lighted sector which chanced to be placed in the spotlight by poetic or scholarly depictions.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)

Painting dissolves the forms at its command, or tends to; it melts them into color. Drawing, on the other hand, goes about resolving forms, giving edge and essence to things. To see shapes clearly, one outlines them—whether on paper or in the mind. Therefore, Michelangelo, a profoundly cultivated man, called drawing the basis of all knowledge whatsoever.
    Alexander Eliot (b. 1919)
